Going low-tox doesn't mean grabbing a few pantry staples and hoping for the best. Some very common combinations either stop working the moment you mix them, or create something you really don't want in your home. Here are the ones I see most often:

Vinegar×Hydrogen peroxide Can form irritating peracetic acid
Vinegar×Castile soap Neutralizes the soap
Enzyme cleaner×Disinfectant Disinfectant can deactivate the enzymes
Baking soda×Vinegar (stored together) Reacts and loses strength before use
Acid cleanersNatural stone Etches the stone permanently
VinegarConcrete counters Can damage some sealers and finishes
SteamHardwood floors Can warp and damage the wood
AlcoholWood furniture Strips or dulls the finish

One more distinction worth knowing: "disinfected" and "sanitized" aren't the same claim. Disinfecting requires an appropriate product, concentration, and full contact time according to its label, and kills a much higher percentage of germs than sanitizing does. If a product or a cleaner tells you something is disinfected, that's a real, specific claim, not just a nicer way of saying "wiped down."

Low-tox cleaning isn't about using fewer ingredients. It's about knowing how the ones you do use actually behave together.
