Cleaning products do not disappear once the work is done. We breathe what enters the air, touch what remains on surfaces, and rinse the rest into the water system. Because I work with cleaning products across multiple homes every week, I pay close attention to what I bring into them. Whenever a lower-toxicity product can do the job well, that is where I begin.
I use the term low-tox rather than “non-toxic” or “chemical-free” because those words promise something that is not really possible. Everything is made of chemicals, including water and our own bodies. Whether a substance can cause harm depends on what it is, how much we encounter, how it enters the body, and how often we are exposed. Natural ingredients can cause irritation or damage, while some synthetic ingredients are useful and well tolerated. A label covered in leaves does not tell us everything we need to know.
My approach is practical: start with the gentlest effective option and reach for something stronger only when the job genuinely requires it.
What enters the air when we clean
Many cleaning products release volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, which evaporate into the air while products are being used and, in some cases, while they are stored. Cleaning supplies are only one source. Paint, furniture, flooring, adhesives, personal-care products, cooking, and many other parts of modern life contribute to indoor VOC levels.
VOCs are a large and varied group, so their health effects are not all the same. Depending on the particular compound and the degree of exposure, some can irritate the eyes, nose, throat, or airways and may contribute to headaches, nausea, dizziness, or worsening respiratory symptoms. Some are associated with more serious long-term health concerns. The EPA has found that levels of many VOCs are consistently higher indoors than outdoors and can rise significantly while certain products are being used.
How a product is applied also matters. Sprays and aerosols can increase inhalation exposure by sending fine droplets into the breathing zone. Ventilation, dilution, dosage, frequency, and the amount of time spent working with a product can all change the overall exposure.
Research involving professional cleaners has found associations between frequent cleaning-product exposure and respiratory conditions, including asthma and chronic respiratory symptoms. It can be difficult to identify one responsible ingredient because cleaners may use numerous products in different environments over many years. That uncertainty does not mean every cleaning product is dangerous. It does give us a sensible reason to reduce avoidable exposure when we can.

Fragrance is not the same as clean
A pleasant scent may change how a room feels, but it does not tell us whether a surface is clean. The word fragrance on a label may represent a mixture of ingredients that are not individually disclosed. Some can be troublesome for people with asthma, migraines, allergies, or fragrance sensitivities. Certain fragrance-related ingredients, including some phthalates, have also been studied for their potential effects on the endocrine system.
The endocrine system is the network of hormones and glands involved in metabolism, growth, reproduction, sleep, stress response, thyroid function, and many other processes. Endocrine-disrupting chemicals can interfere with the way those hormones are produced, transported, or received by the body. Because hormones naturally act at very low concentrations, researchers also consider the timing of an exposure, particularly during stages such as fetal development, infancy, puberty, and pregnancy.
This does not mean every scented product contains phthalates or that every fragrance is dangerous. It does mean fragrance is worth considering as another source of exposure, especially when it serves no cleaning purpose. When an unscented or lightly scented product performs just as well, I generally see no need to fill the room with something extra.
Exposure is rarely about one product
It is tempting to look for a single culprit beneath the kitchen sink, but environmental exposure rarely works that neatly. We encounter substances through air, water, food, dust, furnishings, building materials, cleaning supplies, pest-control products, cosmetics, and personal-care products.
Some chemicals can persist in the body or environment and accumulate over time. Others, including many commonly measured phthalates and VOCs, are processed and cleared relatively quickly. Even when a substance does not remain in the body for years, frequent contact can create an ongoing exposure because it is introduced again and again.
This is one reason triggers can be difficult to recognize. Headaches, irritated airways, skin reactions, migraines, or worsening asthma may have several possible contributors. Symptoms can fluctuate, appear later, or become more noticeable when multiple stressors overlap. That does not mean every unexplained symptom can be blamed on cleaning products. It means our bodies encounter mixtures, while most safety research has historically examined substances one at a time.
We cannot eliminate every environmental exposure, and trying to do so can become exhausting. We can reduce the portions that are unnecessary without first proving that one particular product is responsible for a problem.
Why women may be affected differently
Environmental chemicals can affect people of any sex, and it would be too broad to say that women are always more vulnerable. Differences found in research may reflect both biology and patterns of exposure.
Body composition, hormone activity, immune response, and the ways certain substances are absorbed, distributed, stored, processed, and eliminated can differ between women and men. Hormonal changes across menstruation, pregnancy, postpartum life, and menopause may also influence susceptibility at particular stages of life.
Exposure patterns matter just as much. Women tend to use more fragranced personal-care products, continue to perform a larger share of household cleaning, and make up a substantial portion of the professional cleaning workforce. That can mean more frequent contact with cleaning and fragrance ingredients before biological differences are considered at all.
The point is not that women are fragile, or that men are unaffected. It is that product safety should account for the people most frequently using these products, the stages of life they may be moving through, and the accumulated reality of repeated exposure.
Lower-tox still means clean
Most everyday cleaning does not depend on aggressive chemistry. Water helps loosen and carry soil. Surfactants lift oils from a surface. Microfiber, agitation, rinsing, and time do much of the physical work. A well-chosen tool can sometimes reduce the need for a stronger product altogether.
Cleaning and disinfecting are also different jobs. Cleaning physically removes soil, organic matter, and many microorganisms. Disinfecting uses a registered product to kill specified microorganisms when it is used exactly as directed, including keeping the surface wet for the required contact time. Most surfaces in most homes do not need to be disinfected during every visit. Targeted disinfection can be useful during illness, after contact with bodily fluids, in certain food-safety situations, or when someone in the home is medically vulnerable.
There are also times when stronger chemistry is the responsible choice. Heavy grease, significant mineral buildup, certain infectious risks, and other specialized problems may require a more powerful product, protective equipment, or professional treatment. Significant mold growth, sewage contamination, and other hazardous conditions may be remediation projects rather than ordinary household cleaning.

A practical form of care
No home is free of chemicals, and mine is not either. This is not a purity project or a judgment about what anyone keeps beneath the sink. It is a way of making thoughtful choices where those choices are available.
Use the amount you need. Ventilate while cleaning. Avoid sending products into the air unnecessarily. Choose fragrance-free options when they work for you. Save stronger products for the jobs that truly require them.
That is the approach I bring into every home I care for: thorough cleaning, careful product choices, and no more exposure than the work calls for.
