Behind the Scenes of a Solo Cleaning Business

I hear a version of this a lot: "Isn't house cleaning just kind of a side hustle? Under the table, cash only, no real overhead?" I get why people assume that. A lot of the industry has historically worked that way. But it's not how I run things, and it's not how most legitimate solo cleaning businesses run, either. I wanted to actually show the numbers, because I think most people would be genuinely surprised.

Here's roughly where a typical payment actually goes:

Taxes

As a self-employed business owner, I don't have an employer covering half of my Social Security and Medicare taxes the way a W-2 employee's paycheck does. That's on me entirely, on top of regular income tax. It's a bigger bite than most people realize, and it comes straight off the top of every payment I receive.

Overhead

Insurance, my phone, scheduling software, equipment (vacuums wear out, and they get replaced), vehicle maintenance, gas, cleaning products, and the supplies I use to keep everything low-tox and effective. All of that is a real, ongoing cost of doing this work, the same as any small business carries.

Unpaid business time

This is the one people almost never think about. Every quote I send, every walkthrough I do for a potential new client, the driving time between homes, the laundry I do for cloths and mop heads, the scheduling and bookkeeping that keeps everything running. None of that is billed to anyone. It's real time and real work, and it has to come out of what I earn on the visits that are billed.

So when you're paying for a cleaning visit, you're not just paying for the hours I'm standing in your home. You're supporting an entire small business, the same as you would with any other local business owner. I wanted to share this not to complain, but because I think this kind of transparency helps people see cleaning professionals the way we actually are: business owners, not a side hustle.
